Irvine is a mastered planned city located in Orange County, California. Irvine is bordered by Tustin, Santa Ana, Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. The city is 36 miles south of Los Angeles and 76 miles north of San Diego. This 66 square mile city is made-up of mostly flat valley land situated between the Loma Ridge and San Joaquin Hills. In the southernmost and northernmost areas of the city, there are hills, canyons and plateaus. The city was designed by the Irvine Company, as a completely master planned city in the 1960’s. Irvine was incorporated in 1971. The city is made-up of different sectors called villages, each with similarly designed homes, condos and townhomes, commercial areas, schools and churches. Currently, there are 34 separate villages. The villages are separated by six-lane streets. The city's mission statement is "to create and maintain a community where people can live, work, and play in an environment that is safe, vibrant, and aesthetically pleasing."
